This 3D mechanical zoetrope is a 21st century update on the Victorian animation device. Fifty nine rapid prototyped models are housed within a large motorized drum, illuminated by LEDs. As the piece spins the slots act as a shutter revealing motion. The zoetrope was developed and exhibited during an artist residency at What It Is, Chicago, USA. The period offered me an opportunity to explore my interests in perception, the illusion of movement, the artistic practice of observation and the phenomena of memory versus experience. The piece is a study of the American flag, its colors and the hypnotic movements of a fabric signature.
